After a great night sleep and recovering from jet lag, day 3 in Thailand started with a wake up call from the roosters cooped up nearby our hotel. Being from the city, I have to admit that I never thought I would wake up to the sound of a rooster...but hey we are in Bangkok! We visited Suan Dusit University in Bangkok today to meet with assistant professor Pragai Jirojanakul, R.N., Ph.D. to discuss the public health care system in Thailand.
Professor Jirojanakul touched on some of the major communicable diseases present here including malaria, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis. In addition, she spoke to some of the non communicable conditions on the rise in Thailand such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, cancer, mental illness, and obesity. Professor Jirojanakul then explained how the health care system was structured in Thailand. Finally, we learned the Thai health care system reform that started in 2000 aimed at giving autonomy to the people and providing health care as a right, creating awareness about the importance of health care personnel, developing universal health coverage, and improving the quality of care.
For a good laugh...the WNE guys on their first Tuk Tuk experience (holding on for dear life)!
