Traditional Medicine - Cupping

Today we were able to watch some Chinese traditional medicine in action.  Sean graciously offered himself up to take part in a technique called "cupping".  To start the procedure his hand was massaged, as it is shown to connect to his problem area (his back).

The massage therapy expert then covered Sean's head in a towel and proceeded to twist and manipulate his neck/back in a therapeutic manner.

Then he was laid down and massaged.

The last step of the procedure involved the use of glass cups and an open flame. The flame is inserted into the cup creating negative pressure, which allowed the cup to suction to his skin.  The cups were first rubbed around then settled into place.  The darker areas of his skin were said to indicate underlying painful locations, where blood had coagulated.  By suctioning the area, the expert was able to bring this blood to the surface.

Although the beginning for the procedure may have been slightly uncomfortable, the end result of relief proved to be worth it!
