Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) utilize herbs and animal parts as a mean to treat various ailments. With over 5,000 years of history, TCM has documented thousands of herbs and its use. For example, the dried snakes held by David are used for pain relief. A TCM pharmacy are comprised of buckets of herbs and animal parts. A TCM dose consist of 5 main parts: the principle (the main drug), the auxiliary (enhance effect of the principle), the adjutant (decrease toxicity of other components, and the consultant (direct the principle to the correct organ).

In addition to visiting a TCM hospital, we also visited a state of the art private hospital named Bumrungrad International Hospital (BIM). BIM operates two divisions of pharmacy: IPD (in-patient department) and OPD (out-patient department). Utilizing modern technology such as SwissLog Automated robots, Bar-coded medication administration (BCMA) and computerized physician order entry (CPOE), BIM aims to deliver medication to patients safely and quickly.

The only step where a human is required in the whole drug dispensing workflow is to refill the drug trays for the robot to prepackage each drug into single doses.
